Positioning your Business for Success
Your business is a lot like your automobile; from time-to-time it needs a tune-up or it doesn't run well. At other times, there are more serious engine or alignment issues causing a bumpy ride or value erosion....and the longer you wait to repair, the more expensive it may be to fix.
We find that businesses typically have good people willing to do good work. Why then do companies find themselves having a "bumpy ride" when it comes to achieving their business objectives (usually stated in revenue, profit, margin or market share terms)......or worse yet an "erosion" of their business value? The answer usually lies in their resource alignment (people and dollars) with business objectives, and alignment requires two essential elements - a solid positioning and good process.
- Positioning - The real foundation (DNA) of a company is its positioning. Always relative to competition, positioning is how the customer perceives your company or brand. If you are not proactive about developing a positioning, then the market (your competitors) will develop one for you.
- Process - Process refers to the internal infrastructure and governance behind the scenes (operations, sales, marketing, IT, etc.) that support your positioning.
HMG has developed a unique menu-driven approach to developing a company's positioning and supporting business processes which typically start with an assessment of your business (in whole or by its component parts) as follows:
- Overall Business Assessment (from Market Validation through Operational Excellence to final Business Model Optimization) - This can be a high level or a very detailed assessment of the entire business covering all processes and functions (including customer feedback) and looks for ways to leverage existing and future investments and align all priorities and company assets toward the company's mission. This work often includes recommendations on organizational structures that will best complement the mission.
- Business Component Assessment is similar in approach to the overall Business Assessment, but targets a specific component of the business for precise customization to address a particular client need. An example of this would be a particular Operations or Marketing opportunity or issue where HMG would provide the appropriate strategic and tactical recommendations/initiatives to remedy a situation.
Assessments often uncover related issues or opportunities that, once addressed, put your business on the path you desire. Below is a direct quote from a highly respected CEO regarding improved business performance after applying HMG's approach to positioning the company and its supporting processes:
HMG's Process for improving Business Performance is unlike anything we've ever experienced. It is market and fact-based, intelligent, detailed, and has organization behind each effort. Their Business Models have structure and measures that we've not seen before and they work. Our business has taken off using the metrics they provided and we haven't looked back.
